Our Tips for Avoiding Common Natural Landscaping Mistakes

Whether you’re doing a DIY backyard project or hiring an experienced landscaper, here are some common mistakes we’ve seen that could jeopardize your progress.

Let’s take a look at our tips for avoiding these errors and creating a natural landscape you’ll love!

Overlooking Natural Characteristics

One of the biggest mistakes in landscaping is overlooking the natural characteristics of your site. This includes existing trees, rocks, soil type, sunlight, slope, and more.

With natural landscaping, the goal is to highlight your yard’s best features and create inspiring, relaxing spaces. Before starting any project, it’s essential to understand what makes your property unique.

Of these natural characteristics, slope is often the most crucial. Slope assesses the lay of your land: is it generally flat, uneven, or raised? Poor slope or improper grading can cause water runoff to damage your landscape or even your home’s foundation. Additionally, consider if any nearby trees affect the shade in your yard. Tree canopies will grow over time, which can affect plant health. Large tree roots could potentially impact the construction of new features, such as a shade structure.

To avoid costly mistakes, take a walk through your front or backyard before beginning planning. Note soil type, sunlight, slope, and general grading, so you can plan appropriately. If you’re working with a landscaper, they should assess the space and review your ideas when creating a design.

Improper Plantings

Many people overlook other factors beyond appearance when selecting plants. Selecting plants just for their colours or low-maintenance requirements isn’t enough to ensure a successful garden. If plants are not properly suited to your environment, they can be both a disappointment and a waste of time and money.

When choosing plants, make sure to think long-term. Your garden should accommodate the full-grown size of each plant, not just its current size. Additionally, trees in your yard will extend their canopy over time, shifting the shade levels throughout your yard. Plan ahead and anticipate how you want your garden to look today, as well as how it will look years from now.

To simplify planting, we’ve previously shared how to select plants based on their hardiness zone. Using the Canadian zones map will help you understand what to look for when shopping for plants. Native plants are also a great option, as they are designed to thrive in your environment.

By choosing the right plants and location from the beginning, you’ll save time, money and effort over time.

Ignoring Drainage Needs

Water is beautiful, but poorly managed water has the capacity to ruin your landscape.

Every landscape, whether a front or backyard, needs proper drainage and water management. Drainage is essential because rainwater or runoff needs space to move through your landscape. If not built into the plan, water will naturally create its own path through your space, which can cause issues or damage your new landscape features.

Drainage planning doesn’t have to be unattractive. When done right, water management will be a worthwhile investment in keeping your natural landscape looking fresh.

Skipping Maintenance Planning

Your landscape and garden will look amazing the day its completed, but what about years down the road?

A common mistake in natural landscaping is overlooking ongoing maintenance requirements. Without care or a defined plan, even the best natural landscapes could become overgrown or messy.

Before finalizing your landscape plan, consider the maintenance it needs. Think about the time you’re willing to commit to pruning, cutting, and weeding. If low-maintenance is your priority, consider perennials and native plants, which require less annual upkeep.

To spend more time enjoying your yard or water feature than maintaining it, outsource maintenance to a professional landscaper.

Forgetting to Make it Comfortable

A beautiful landscape can be incredible to look at, but it should also be inviting.

Too often, landscapes are made just for appearances, not functionality. At Raymar, we believe your outdoor space should inspire you to spend time outside. Like a natural retreat away from the craziness of life, the ultimate goal of a natural landscape is to help you fully relax.

To make a peaceful landscape your reality, consider installing features like a natural pond or waterfall. And, include a seating area so you can sit back and enjoy all those peaceful water sounds!

Summary

Everyone’s landscape ambitions are different, but following these tips will help ensure your project is a success. Planning ahead of time and consulting a professional can help prevent many common mistakes, creating a personalized and functional landscape.
